Black-capped Chickadee

Poecile atricapillus

The chickadee's call is the inspiration for its name, but listen for the Black-capped Chickadee's song in spring: "Fee-bee..." It's a common backyard bird year-round, and spring will find the Black-capped Chickadee looking for a small cavity in which it can nest. There are six species of chickadees that can be found throughout North America. Washington State has four of them.

Seattle - Discovery Park

Puget Trough

The 585 acres of varied habitat at Discovery Park offer great birding opportunities year-round. March provides an opportunity to view our winter visitors before they begin to head back to their breeding grounds. Look for Golden-crowned, White-crowned, Song, and Fox Sparrows in the blackberry brambles. Ducks, cormorants, gulls, loons, grebes, and alcids are viewable from the West Point lighthouse.
